The City of Shakopee owns and operates the sanitary sewer collection system. Collected wastewater is conveyed to the Metropolitan Council’s Blue Lake Treatment Plant where it is treated and discharged. Sewer rates are set by the City Council and reflect the costs of operating and maintaining the collection system, as well as the charges imposed by the Metropolitan Council for treatment. For resident’s convenience, billing and collection for sanitary sewer services is handled by the Shakopee Public Utilities Commission on the same statement as water and electrical charges.
Owners of all parcels of property in the City are charged a fee to cover the cost of managing storm water runoff. The fee is based on the amount of runoff from the property and is determined by its size and land use. The revenue generated by these fees is used for street sweeping and for the maintenance, construction and reconstruction of the storm drainage system in the City. As with the sanitary sewer system, rates are determined by the City Council but billing and collection is handled by the Public Utilities Commission.
Water and electric services within the City of Shakopee are municipally-owned, but independently operated by the Shakopee Public Utilities Commission. The five-member Commission hires its own employees, sets its own budget, adopts rules and regulations and fixes rates for water and electric services. Sewer, water, electric and storm drainage services are all billed by the Shakopee Public Utilities Commission to City residents on a monthly basis.
