Scheduling an Inspection
Inspections may be scheduled by calling 952-233-9570 at least 24 hours in advance. All appropriate installers are required to be present for the inspection.

Fire Alarm Systems

Placing a Fire Alarm System Out of Service 
On occasion, industrial, commercial and multi-family residential occupancies need to take their fire alarm systems out of service to conduct tests and/or make repairs. To take a fire alarm out of service, call the monitoring company servicing the account and notify the Shakopee Fire Department at 952-233-9570. After testing/repairs are completed, call the monitoring company servicing the account to put the fire alarm back in service and notify the Shakopee Fire Department at 952-233-9570.

Policy #15-2001 – Fire Watch for Out of Service Fire Detection and Protection Systems

Plan Review
The Shakopee Fire Department is the authority having jurisdiction for plan review and acceptance testing of fire alarm systems.

Fire Alarm Systems - Fire alarm systems include those systems where heat detectors or multiple smoke detectors are provided for detection and one or more notification appliances are provided for occupant warning. Fire alarm systems may include monitoring of fire protection systems.

Fire alarm system plan reviews shall be submitted to Telgian, Attn: Plan Review Department, 900 Circle 75 Parkway, Suite 680, Atlanta, GA  30339. Telgian may be contacted at 770-432-3882. Plan review fees shall be paid to Telgian.

Plan submittal shall include:

  • A minimum of two (2) set of plans for each system.
  • Manufacturer specification sheets for all devises. 
  • Standby battery calculations.

A Fire Permit Application form shall be submitted to the Shakopee Fire Department, 129 Holmes St. S., Shakopee, MN 55379.

Fire Protection Monitoring Systems - Fire protection monitoring systems include those systems where the primary function is to monitor fire protection systems. Fire protection monitoring systems will include one smoke detector and one manual pull station and may contain one or more notification appliances for occupant warning.

Fire protection monitoring system plan reviews shall be submitted to the Shakopee Fire Department, 129 Holmes St. S., Shakopee, MN 55379. Plan review fees shall be paid to the City of Shakopee.

Plan submittal shall include:

  • A minimum of two (2) set of plans for each system. 
  • Manufacturer specification sheets for all devises. 
  • Standby battery calculations. 
  • Fire Permit Application form. 

Installation Requirements
Fire alarm system installation and fire protection monitoring system installation shall be completed in accordance with applicable codes. All installations shall be provided with an Underwriter’s Laboratory (U.L.) Fire Alarm Certificate. A Certificate of Occupancy will not be issued until a copy of the certificate is received by the Shakopee Fire Department.

Acceptance Testing
The Shakopee Fire Department provides acceptance testing for industrial, commercial and certain multi-family occupancies. Acceptance testing includes the following:

  • Devise Test. All detection devises will be inspected and tested. 
  • Operational Test. All notification appliances will be inspected and tested. A report of signals sent to the monitoring facility shall be provided upon completion of operational testing. 
  • Random trouble and ground fault test. 
  • Emergency power test. 
  • Certificate of Completion. A contractor’s Fire Alarm Certificate of Completion form shall be provided upon completion of testing.

Fire Protection Systems

Underground Piping for Fire Protection Systems
Plans for underground piping supplying fire protection systems shall be approved by the Shakopee Fire Department and Shakopee Public Utilities. Piping shall be installed and tested in accordance with Shakopee Fire Prevention Bureau Policy #05-2000 – Underground Piping Supply Fire Protection Systems and Combination Fire/Domestic Systems.

Placing a Fire Protection System Out of Service

Prior to starting any work on a fire protection system, the fire alarm monitoring company servicing the account shall be notified and the Shakopee Fire Department shall be notified at 952-233-9570. After testing/repairs are completed, call the monitoring company servicing the account to put the fire alarm back in service and notify the Shakopee Fire Department at 952-233-9570.

Plan Review

Wet and Dry Pipe Fire Protection Systems and Standpipes. Plan reviews for wet and dry pipe fire protection systems, including standpipe systems shall be submitted to Telgian, Attn: Plan Review Department, 900 Circle 75 Parkway, Suite 680, Atlanta, GA  30339. Telgian may be contacted at 770-432-3882. Plan review fees shall be paid to Telgian.

Special Hazard Systems. Plan reviews for special hazard system, not including commercial cooking hoods, shall be submitted to Telgian, Attn: Plan Review Department, 900 Circle 75 Parkway, Suite 680, Atlanta, GA  30339. Telgian may be contacted at 770-432-3882. Plan review fees shall be paid to Telgian.

Commercial Cooking Hood Systems. Plan reviews for commercial cooking hood systems shall be submitted to the Shakopee Fire Department, 129 Holmes St. S., Shakopee, MN 55379.

Plan review fees shall be paid to the City of Shakopee. Plan submittal shall include:

  • A minimum of two (2) set of plans for each system. 
  • Fire protection system calculations. 
  • Manufacturer specification sheets for all devises. 
  • Fire Permit Application form.

Installation Requirements
Fire protection systems shall be completed in accordance with applicable codes. Fire protection systems with 20 or more heads shall be provided with a Fire Protection Monitoring System and shall be provided with an Underwriter’s Laboratory (U.L.) Fire Alarm Certificate. A Certificate of Occupancy will not be issued until a copy of the certificate is received by the Shakopee Fire Department.

Acceptance Testing
The Shakopee Fire Department provides acceptance testing for industrial, commercial and certain multi-family occupancies. Acceptance testing includes the following:

  • Rough-In Inspections. Rough-in inspections shall be completed prior to concealment of any fire protection piping.
  • Hydrostatic Test. Tests shall be completed at not less than 200 psi for 2 hours or 50 psi above static pressure in excess of 150 psi for 2 hours.
  • Pneumatic Test. Dry pipe systems shall be tested to 40 psi of air pressure for 24 hours.
  • Devise Test. All control valves will be inspected and operated.
  • Operational Test. The Inspectors Test Valve for each riser shall be used to activate the water flow devise or pressure switch devise on each riser. Water flow devises and/or pressure switches shall activate the fire alarm.
  • Main Drain Test. Readings for the static and residual pressures shall be provided.
  • Certificate of Completion. A copy of the Contractor’s Material and Test Certificate for Aboveground Piping shall be provided upon completion of testing.

Certificate of Occupancy Information

In order for the Shakopee Fire Department to recommend that the City issue an occupancy permit, all life safety features of the occupancy shall be in working order. To assist you in identifying common issues that arise during the final occupancy inspection, the Shakopee Fire Department has created a New Construction Pre-Final Checklist.
