Becoming a Shakopee Firefighter

The Shakopee Fire Department employs paid-on-call firefighters who are responsible for responding to emergency calls. Being a paid-on-call firefighter requires attendance at training and drills every Monday evening and responding to a wide range of emergency calls, averaging 5 to 10 hours per week. Firefighters are required to maintain a 35 percent attendance record for emergency calls and drills.

Firefighters are paid for fire calls, training and meeting attendance, and are eligible for membership in the Shakopee Fire Department Relief Association. However, many firefighters also devote significant unpaid time to Department activities. For most it is more than just a part-time job, but an opportunity to be part of a long tradition and to serve their community.

Shakopee firefighters are trained and certified as Firefighter II by the Minnesota Fire Service Certification Board (MFSCB) and as Emergency Medical Responders by the Minnesota Emergency Medical Services Regulatory Board (EMSRB). Several firefighters have obtained additional training in Emergency Medicine, Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus (SCUBA) and Hazardous Materials.

Firefighters must be 18 years of age or older and possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. and a valid driver's license. The selection process includes an oral interview, physical agility testing, a background check and psychological, medical and drug testing. Firefighters must reside within a 10 minute response time of an existing or proposed Shakopee fire station.

If you are interested in applying for a position as a paid-on-call firefighter, please visit the employment page to see if we are currently accepting applications. A new class of firefighters is typically hired each spring.  For more information about becoming a Shakopee firefighter, please call 952-233-9320 or 952-233-3837/TTY.
